5 Reasons For The Insufficient Bonding Force Of Electroplated Coatings

5 reasons for the insufficient bonding force of electroplated coatings

As a protective treatment method for metal surfaces, electroplating is widely used in the production of various metals because of its difficult-to-replace advantages in beautifying the appearance of products, enhancing metal texture, and improving corrosion resistance and wear resistance.

For this reason, nickel-iron plating, iron-tin plating, gold-silver plating, aluminum-silver plating, and other plating species have been derived. Although these plating types are different, many manufacturers have reported a problem during the production process: that is-the bonding force of the plating layer is not enough, and it is easy to fall off!

According to experts, there are many reasons why this phenomenon is caused.

In the final analysis, there are probably the following five reasons.

1. The electroplating solution is contaminated

In the electroplating production in the factory, metal oxides, metal impurities, insoluble suspended solids, organic impurities, and other harmful impurities enter the electroplating bath due to various reasons. The excessive accumulation of these impurities causes the electroplating bath performance and the quality of the coating to be affected. Therefore, it is necessary to regularly clean up impurities and treat the electroplating solution.

2. Poor pretreatment of the substrate

If there is no problem with the plating solution, it may be necessary to check again whether there is a gray layer or liquid residue on the surface of the substrate, as well as other chemical substances. Because the plating product is not cleaned well, it will affect the flatness, corrosion resistance, and bonding force of the plating layer, and cause the plating layer to deposit, loose and discontinuous, and even the plating layer will peel off, which is the loss of the actual use-value of the product. Therefore, it is also an important task to ensure a good pre-treatment process for electroplating.

Third, the process control is not in place

Process control plays a vital role in the quality of electroplated coatings. If there is no problem with the plating solution and pre-treatment, it is necessary to check whether there is a problem with the process control. Process control such as the temperature in the tank, the density of the current, the pH value of the syrup, and the plating time must match the product. Therefore, process control must strive for accuracy.

Fourth, the production schedule is too fast

A product is often processed and assembled from many parts. As we all know, in order to complete the processing of these parts, it is often necessary to cross multiple workshops. Unfortunately, electroplating is the last process. Therefore, we often see such a scene: the parts have not yet come to the electroplating workshop, and the brothers in the assembly workshop are already waiting for the parts to be assembled.

This caused the construction period to be too tight. Everyone worked overtime to complete the task and rushed the construction period. As a result, the electroplating time did not meet the process requirements. In addition, the night work light affected the inspection, which ultimately affected the electroplating quality.

5. Unreasonable product design

Product designers and production personnel are two completely different groups of people. Product designers pay more attention to the shape, size, machining accuracy, and other conditions of the product parts in the design of the part drawings, but do not think much about the processing technology of the product, let alone the electroplating process. Therefore, it also brings some unnecessary troubles to the electroplating work, which also has a certain impact on the quality of electroplated products.
